Longing For Days of Yore By
Michelene K. Bell
Have
you ever longed for days gone by, when life was much
different? When you could pick up a phone and hear a voice
at the other end…not a recording indicating which button to
push in order to get to your party.
It does seem to
take twice as long and many times your customer service call
becomes one of frustration. Oh how I long for those days
when people spoke to one another and not a machine.
Now don’t get me wrong, technology is great…to a certain
point. Emails, the web, cell phone technology all have made
their mark…connecting people around the world; however, to
what end?
Lately, I find myself recalling the history
of Atlantis and can’t help but compare the similarities
between then and now. Are we setting ourselves up for a
fall? Perhaps.
How do we rein in a world that is
fascinated with gadgetry and the latest and newest
technology? How do we “un-ring” a bell that has already been
rung? Do we have the ability or even the desire to do so?
It is said, “everything in moderation”; yet, how many of
us sit in front of a computer day in and day out? How many
millions email or text from their phones rather than pick up
and actually connect on a personal level?
Have we
lost the drive for social interaction? Are we a society
where impersonalization is now the norm?
Is this a
battle worth fighting? Can we take another route to reawaken
how we communicate?
I know the questions are many;
however, unless we are willing to look at them and figure
out a different scenario, where will we be on this road of
technology? Are we destined to follow in the footsteps of
Atlantis?
Any solutions? Perhaps we can reinvent the
excitement we once had as a family. When we actually played
together, ate meals together and shared the day’s events…a
bonding that supersedes the Game Boys, X-Boxes, Wiis,
texting and so forth.
Spending more time with family
and friends, reintroducing one another to the joys of social
contact, can make a difference. And the good thing, we can
still have our technology…it’s all about moderation.
Now I realize that those days are long past and we must live
in the present moment…however, I can dream…can you?
Let’s get back to the basis of our strengths…our unity as a
family.
Blessings my dear friends,
Michelene
