The End of a Season By
Michelene K. Bell
Spring is coming to a
close and the hot days of summer are just around the corner. With May there
comes the celebration of Mothers across the country. Family members conspire to
“surprise” mom on her special day…whether it be breakfast in bed, an outing at a
nice restaurant or gifts of flowers and candy. Of course, there’s that all
important card saying, “I love you”.
Did you know that Mother’s Day is
over 200 years old? When I was looking for an inspirational article to include
in the May issue, nothing touched my heart. However, as I continued my search, I
came across an amazing piece about “Women in History”. What was so great about
this is that it touched my soul; and that little kid inside, that craved
information, was on top of the world.
To my delight I learned about women
inventors, poets, pioneers, first time governors, daredevils, artists, Nobel
Peace winners and so much more. It was intriguing to discover that the “Battle
Hymn of the Republic” was written by a woman named Julia Ward Howe; that Mary
Anderson was granted a patent for the windshield wiper. Then there was Virne
“Jackie” Mitchell, a pitcher, who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig as the
first woman in professional baseball. These are just a few of the women in
history who have made a difference.
Yes, May is dedicated to Mother’s
around the globe…yet, it is important to recognize all women who impact our
society and our very existence.
What can we learn from them? We can look
to their tenacity and visions; we can see their courage in the face of
adversity; we can become inspired by their willingness to help others in need;
we can learn the lessons they bring to us and we can see and honor the value of
who they are…the wayward pioneers in a world of opportunity.
So there you
have it. I do hope you enjoy the “Women in History” and that you too, will be
inspired and in awe of such remarkable individuals who have shaped our world.
Remember, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, may we make it special for all the
women in our lives. Also, let us not forget to pay honor to Mother Earth…our
home away from home.
Happy Mother’s Day…celebrate the meaning of you.
Blessings my friends, take care.
