Colon Hydrotherapy
What Everyone Should Know
By Donna DeCarolis
Colon Hydrotherapy has been around since 1400 B.C. and was first found in
Ancient Egyptian writings. This healing modality has also been documented in
writings from the Hindus, Greeks, Chinese, Romans and Babylonians. Hippocrates,
the great physician, was known for his use of colonics for fever therapy. Dr.
Kellogg, whose greatest notoriety is from Kellogg’s Cereal Company, was a great
advocate of colon hydrotherapy; he reported in the 1917 Journal of American
Medicine, that in all but twenty cases, he had used no surgery for the treatment
of gastrointestinal disease in his patients. The interesting fact is that Dr.
Kellogg had more than 40,000 cases of gastrointestinal disease; and by
instituting colon hydrotherapy for his patients, it works out that only 1 in
2000 case needed surgery.
Colon Hydrotherapy is known by various names such as: Colonics, Colonic
Irrigation and Colon Lavage. Its purpose is to help clear toxins from the colon
and body through a safe process using warm filtered water through a sterile
rectal tube, nozzle or speculum into the colon. As the water softens the waste
material, natural peristalsis allows the fecal matter to be eliminated. This
process is repeated throughout the session without the use of harsh drugs or
chemicals. Colon hydrotherapy is an extended and more complete form of an enema.
Since the turn of the century, Colon Hydrotherapy has experienced periods of
mixed reactions. The main factor for negative responses was that the therapists
were untrained and unskilled. This was very detrimental to its professional
growth. Also, by the early 1950’s Colon Hydrotherapy was flourishing in the US.
However, the use of Colon Hydrotherapy slowly dwindled around 1972 when most
hospitals and nursing homes removed their Colon Hydrotherapy equipment for the
more favored medical procedures; which were, at the time, colostomies and
prescriptive laxatives.
There are two types of equipment used; the open and the closed systems. There
have been arguments throughout the years as to which equipment works best. It is
recommended that every person should try both to see which one is preferred for
that individual. Both systems instill filtered water for the elimination of
fecal matter. The temperature and pressure on each device are controlled. When
looking for a reputable Colon Hydrotherapy clinic, please make sure that only
FDA approved equipment is used. FDA equipment has several check valves to ensure
there is no back flushing from the previous client.
Therapists should be certified by I-ACT (The International Association for Colon
Hydrotherapy) as well. Why? The reason is that many therapists only receive “on
the job training” and have not gone through the stringent guidelines set forth
by I-ACT to ensure competency. Because this state does not yet have any laws
regulating Colon Hydrotherapy, I-ACT certification ensures that therapist is
educated in this field. Trained therapists know how to screen for
contraindications and when a referral to a physician or other medical care
provider is needed.
The therapist should always be willing and available to be in the room with you
to assure the best results. A full session should last about 55 minutes. Shorter
sessions without a therapist in the room can create an incomplete session,
causing a sick feeling the next day as toxins are stirred up and not adequately
removed from the body. A great suggestion for the amount of sessions is about
six sessions. This consists of three in 7-10 days then, one a week for three
weeks, or until symptoms of colon toxicity are alleviated.
A reasonable goal should be to have 2 to 3 bowel movement per day; when wiping,
the toilet paper should be clean. It is surely an indication that colonics are
needed if bowel movements are less frequent and numerous wiping is needed. When
healthy bowel patterns return, colonics may not be needed until the symptoms
arise again, signaling that maintenance is required. People have remarked how
children can have such large bowel movements and the adult’s will appear small
and ribbon-like; this is because the child has a complete emptying and has not
built up residual fecal matter in the colon.
The bottom line is to care for yourself by caring for your colon; try colonics!
In just a few sessions energy is revitalized! I remember saying to myself, “Wow!
Is this how I am supposed to feel?” It is sad to think that people have adjusted
to being sick. Colonics and a healthy diet with lots of filtered water will make
a new you! Be blessed and enjoy your new life. Change can be GREAT!
