A Tribute To Virginia Tech
By Michelene K. Bell
There are no words that can express the heartfelt pain and sorrow of the events that took place at Virginia Tech, nor can the depth of grief be eased from the minds, hearts and souls of humanity.
The lives of these innocent souls have altered the course of family, friends and nations. We may never know what demons the young man, who changed so many lives, lived with that brought him to a point of no return. No amount of speculation can ever give us all the answers we so desperately need.
We, who stand on the outside looking in, must hold the space that will allow for the healing process to begin.
Whether death is an ending or a beginning matters not. It is about the impact each individual brought to the world. How they lived their lives touched so many and indeed there is a void in the fabric of space that will be forever memorialized.
There will be much said and written about this event — and rightly so. But we also must remember not to allow the appearance of death to take from us our compassion, love and above all our willingness to live life. Do not give death that power.
It is indeed a painful time and grief will be the companion along with anger, judgment and bitterness. Blame may run rampant and society will once again revisit the issue of violence with deadly force. But remember, it isn’t the weapon that brings sorrow, it is the “madness” of the individual who wields the destructive force.
Virginia Tech is a tragedy that will live forever in the hearts and minds of humanity. Why it happened is only a guess. The results, though devastating, will bring us and our world to a new arena of action. We will move beyond this time of loss, but we will never forget those whose lives were cut so short. And lest we forget, “thank God” for the heroes who placed themselves in harms way to protect those in their care.
This month we dedicate this issue to all the families and friends of Virginia Tech. May the heartfelt prayers of all humanity be stepping stones to the renewal of life.
Take care my dear friends. I leave you with a simple truth…
“Life will always be to a large extent what we ourselves make it.”
Samuel Smiles 1812-1904
