The Drunken Master
by Cheryl J. Johnson  &   Diane L. Johnson

After a rocky childhood, a man became an alcoholic. For thirty years he lived as a drunken bum. His home was on the streets, his clothes were soiled, and he smelled. The people who saw him would carefully cross to the other side of the street to avoid him or daintily step over him so they wouldn’t soil their shoes. Occasionally, a kind soul would give him a handout. Whether the response was kind or unkind didn’t seem to matter to the man. His response was always the same—calm acceptance. Everyone who saw him knew that they were far more advanced on the spiritual path than he. After all, a spiritual person would never allow himself to live like that.

Yet, when this drunken bum crossed over, it was a joyous celebration. Prior to his incarnation, he was close to mastery, but looking over his life, he had decided that he had not perfected the virtue of humility. The humility he experienced in his life as a drunken bum completed his learning cycle, and he graduated from that lifetime a full Master.

The dictionary defines judgment as: 6. criticism or censure 7. the ability to come to opinions about things; power of comparing and deciding; understanding; good sense.

Clearly judgment can be positive (loving) or negative (critical). Because we exist on a plane of duality we find it very natural to judge “this” or “that” to be good or bad. From the time we are born we are taught judgment is a fundamental tool of survival. Yet, all teachings of Light advise, “judge not lest ye be judged.”

Loving Judgment

This is deciding if something is good or bad for us without attaching negative emotions to whatever (or whoever) it is we’re looking at. Instead of judging whatever it is to be bad, we simply look at it and say “This does not serve me in my life.” or “This does not create positive emotions in my life.” Loving judgment allows life to be what it is without any negative impact on self. In essence, we learn to love all life—including ourselves—equally.

Loving judgment is all about tolerance. There is a beautiful definition of tolerance which basically says, “tolerance is the eager and glad acceptance of another’s path to perfection. It is recognizing that each individual has their own path to their own perfection and each individual arrives at it in bits and pieces in their own time.”

An important part of loving judgment is recognizing and acting on what is, instead of living in the land of “what could be” which in essence is saying to the other person everything would be great if he or she would just change. What happens is that we have gone to our critical judgment self, believing something to be less than or imperfect. It’s saying, “My way is the only way. Therefore, if you don’t think my way, you’re wrong.”

In critical judgment, we look for someone to blame. For example, in a relationship, someone must be at fault. We use phrases like, “You made me…” “You don’t understand me. You refuse to see how hard I try to make you happy. It’s your fault I’m leaving because….”

Basic Principles

To understand the effects of judgment, we must first understand that everything and everyone in life is energy and energy just is energy.

When our emotions come into play we are either on the positive or negative side of judgment.

Emotions are a constant and like energy cannot be destroyed. They can only be transformed from negative to positive or positive to negative. Emotions are shared; are contagious, magnetic and creative.

Consequences To The Soul

Judgments are emotions in action. All action has consequences.

When we judge anything, we are resonating to the energy of that which we are judging. Therefore, if we are thinking something as “bad,” we are actually experiencing that negative energy within our body and mind. Over time, we create a negative pattern of critical judgment that becomes a part of our soul DNA.

Negative judgments includes: self-righteousness, indignation, anger, contempt, and so on.

Since energy cannot be destroyed, whatever energetic reality we create, in any lifetime, is carried with us into death. It continues in our soul DNA as we created it until we transform it.

The soul is perfection so it naturally moves toward perfection at all times. It naturally moves to what it is. We incarnate to help realize (make real) our perfection through thought, word, and deed.

Transforming critical judgment to loving judgment is growth for the soul and in truth all souls are faultless — they are neither good nor bad. The roles we play, the choices we make may be less than perfect but in essence the soul is perfection and the body (including the personality) that the soul is animating is perfect even though we can’t always see it.

“Judge not, lest ye be judged,” means that in whatever manner we judge, we will be judged in return. It is a universal law that everything we send out must be returned to us in like kind.

We can change our world when we consciously decide which side of the fence we spend our time. Do we come more from the “loving judgment” or the critical side of judgment?

Remember, if we judge harshly, we will be judged accordingly. If we come from a loving place, that same energy will be returned to us.

Life’s experiences are not always as they appear…therefore is it not best to judge on the side of love rather than that of criticism?

We cannot know the spiritual truth of another unless we have walked in their shoes.

We do our best to live good lives, to be kind and loving, but sometimes we slip into judgment. How much sweeter would life be if every time we looked at someone we remembered the Drunken Master and looked at that person as the Master who will help us through our next life?
