Ah Yes…Spring
By Dr. Evelyn Schiff
Ask yourself a few questions and really be honest with yourself.
• Do I really want this?
• Does it really taste all that good?
• Am I really hungry for food?
• Why do I feel upset?
• Why am I eating this?
• Am I bored, tired, disappointed or lonely? If so, will eating make it go away?
• Or do I eat a lot so I can sleep and forget?
IT’S A FACT THAT:
The human body gets hungry about every four hours.
It needs fuel – the kind it can use for energy and action and feeling great.
Cravings occur because the body cries for what it needs and doesn’t get. So what are we lacking?
Anger and hurt are twins. The only difference is what we do with them.
Anger calls for action. We have to do something. (Maybe eat?)
“Hurt,” is anger pushed down inside and directed at one’s self. (More food?).
Doing the same thing over and over gets the same results.
It’s another fact that breakfast is important. We’d never expect a car to run on empty, but not eating, from night clear into midmorning or noon next day, is expecting performance without fuel. Experts declare that the human body fears starvation and will hold tight to keep from losing its bulk. I agree. Having grown up with overweight and eating disorders I understand them. Mine didn’t let up until I began to think about what I did, question how it made me feel and conquer my fear of food. For me that was a biggie.
Oh, yes, there’s one thing more. If we can look into a mirror without judgment or self-criticism of what of see then we may one step closer to embracing our true selves.
Let’s give up blame and shame forever and as we walk the shedding pet or just enjoy spring flowers, we can breathe in qualities of hope and promise. Swimsuit ads will come and go. Self-acceptance, self-respect and love of self is the greater prize.
