An Interview with Guy Finley

Ellen: The quest does seem to be never-ending, and yet there are rewards all along the way. Could you give us some final encouraging words about the wonders of the path?

Guy: Picture a thief who by fate and circumstance has become a con artist and has tricked others into giving him land, power and influence. He always fears that he will be exposed as not being what he pretends to be. Then, one day the seemingly cruelest of fates causes him to lose everything and he has to work in a stable. But he always loved horses, so he does his work well. The nobleman for whom he now works notices this and gives him some land to be in charge of. He does such a good job that the prince who gave the nobleman his property notices and calls him for an interview. As they talk, the prince realizes this man may be a relative of his who was lost in some past war. So he sends him to his father, the king, who finds on him a birthmark that proves he’s his long-lost son. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m describing to you an actual series of interior events that happens to a person. First, he’s a thief — pretending to be something.

Ellen: And thinking he has to grab everything.

Guy: And that he has to fight and hurt people to hold it. And then, if he’s lucky, he loses it; he’s humbled. And when he’s humbled, if he has a right heart in him, bit by bit he begins to do something right and good, and Truth notices it. Then Truth lifts him from his station by giving him something of his own that he never had when he was clinging to what he wanted from others. Then, when he acts responsibly towards that, the prince notices, and he is given a higher estate. And then the king notices, and finally he gets the title he was born with. That’s a true story. That’s supposed to be the story of your life and the life of everyone else who ever longed to have a relationship with Truth. That describes the journey from beginning to end. 
