Sanctuary…The Path To Consciousness, Part I

An Interview with Stephen Lewis

By Heidi Evelyn Rain

Steven Lewis is the co-founder of Energetic Matrix Church of Consciousness, LLC (EMC2) and co-author of Sanctuary…The Path to Consciousness.

Heidi What were some of your interests while growing up?

Stephen I was just a regular kid who hung out with my friends, played football and then discovered girls. I was also an avid reader with interests in mathematics, science, and physics. With the advent of Quantum physics my life changed.

Heidi What was your introduction to this kind of thinking?

Stephen Well, when I was in high school I read the works of Wilhelm Reich. I was mesmerized by the fact “that everything was energy” according to physicists throughout history. Energy was the guiding principle in life. Later, reading books on acupuncture and homeopathy, I realized that they were predicated on energy as opposed to our Western science which I found to be very linear.

Heidi Your family taught you “If you want to do something, do it fast!” with the implication “life is short.” How did that phrase effect you?

Stephen It was very impactful for me and I felt it shaped my destiny.

Heidi Did you grow up with actual illness in the family?

Stephen Yes. They were an extraordinarily physically unhealthy family. When I was about twelve, my father got cancer and I was fairly young when he died. It was a time that would change the course of my life. It actually was the beginning of my developing an interest in the subtle energies of matter.

Heidi Who became your role model after your father’s death?

Stephen My grandfather. His interests were physics and mathematics. He was a mathematician in Russia; however, he was unable to pursue his field in this country. He passed along to me a special knowledge…not only of mathematics but also the mysticism of the Kabbalah. He and his friends played cards a lot and taught me chess and mathematical games.

Heidi You figure he had more of a sense of who you were than your parents did?

Stephen Oh yes, absolutely.

Heidi You talk about your grandfather and the Kabbalah. How did this influence you?

Stephen My grandfather and his friends came from a generation of people who were intrigued with the mystery of life. They were fascinated with the same phenomena that we are today — the world of spirituality and the world of quantum consciousness, (quantum mechanics). Remember, in almost every spiritual endeavor there is a mystical element. Among Jews, it’s the Kabbalah and my grandfather and his friends were very involved in that.

Heidi What was your neighborhood like when growing up?

Stephen I grew up in a typical neighborhood of Jewish and Italian families. People would sit outside in the street just to get out of their apartments. There was a lot of interaction in the neighborhood, with the old men sitting outside playing chess and cards while the kids hung out with their friends. They were, the, Renaissance men — those who were interested in the world as a whole. This helped me to see the broader picture rather than one small faction of the day-to-day struggles of life.

Heidi In what way?

Stephen Because when you begin to look at life in that totality, you don’t specialize. You see the miracle in everything and there’s no limit, no limitation.

Heidi Did your grandfather literally teach you?

Stephen Oh yes, sure. I mean, at every level. As I said, I was an athletic kid, I had friends, and I also read books by Dostoevsky, The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov , because it was an interest of my grandfather and his friends. To them it was their mother’s milk. So I used to read them and we’d talk about darkness and light, good and evil. That’s why I didn’t read about Dick and Jane and see Spot run because I really didn’t care if Spot said Bow-wow or not. You know what I mean?

Heidi Sure. So this darkness, the good and evil as reflected in Dostoevsky, is what interested you?

Stephen Exactly. In fact, one of my favorite movies I think contains extraordinary moments about just that: “The Devil’s Advocate.”

Heidi Yes. It was incredible.

Stephen Yes. Well, it’s about good and evil, isn’t it?

Heidi Yes, absolutely the epitome of it.

Stephen It always is. And what we’re living right now is the epitome of good and evil.
