The Right Organizing Products
By Brenda Prinzavalli
D o you have a closet full of organizing products? Do you purchase items in the hope they will magically make your space organized? When you are not sure what to do with them and don’t actually use them, they become part of the clutter problem rather than the solution. Here are four steps to follow for purchasing the right organizing products.
1. Assess — Go to the space you want to organize. Determine the best place for the items you have. Ask the following: Would it be easier if these items were not all stacked together? …if they were in drawers? …if they were divided into their own compartments? Based on your answers you now know whether you need more shelves, drawers or divided sections.
2. Measure, measure, measure — Draw a diagram of the space with the ideal components needed. Measure ALL aspects of the space including anything unusual, such as plumbing under a sink, how much of the drawer is usable when it’s open, is the opening smaller than the actual inside space, etc.
3. Shop — Take a tape measure and your drawing to the store in order to find the right organizing products.
4. Set-up — Keep the receipts and don’t take off tags or stickers until you’ve tested the items to make sure they not only fit the space, but also that your items fit as well. Let everyone in the household know about how the new organizing system works so it will continue to be organized.
Now, when you turn down that isle of glistening organizing products that are tempting you to buy them, you know how to plan what you need and can put your purchases to good use!
