POWER VS. FORCE…
AN INTERVIEW WITH
DR. DAVID R. HAWKINS
Dr. Hawkins: I was always obsessed with discerning the essence, and the core and the source of Truth. While all the other kids were out playing stick ball, I was reading Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates who is my hero. I went through four years of psychoanalysis. Eventually, I reached a state of despair at the inability to locate the source of existence, life and truth. In so doing, I recapitulated Dante’s Inferno. I went to the depths of Hell, which are far worse than anybody has ever described aptly. As you get to the bottom of Hell there is a warning that reads: “Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here.” From that point on, it becomes endless hopelessness and absolute spiritual despair. At the time I was an atheist. In the midst of being in this timeless Hell, a voice from within said, “If there is a God, I ask Him to help me.” I then went into oblivion and when I came out the mind was silenced. There was only a stunning awareness of all of existence as Divinity. Subsequent to that, the mind never did think again! (Laughter)
KB: And so Hell can be experienced at any time, whether you are…
Dr. Hawkins: It can be experienced by anybody, anytime if they’ve got the right karmic set-up. If they have asked the question that can only be answered in that way. Karmically, you’re driven to a certain point where you precipitate the only experience that will finally solve it. I went from atheism to spiritual despair and then into what Thoreau would call a ‘maximal possible condition’. That’s what speaks now. I don’t have anything to do with talking to you on the phone, today.
When people talk about the personal “I”, it is a presumed agency they think is responsible for their thinkingness and decisions. What they fail to see is all that is happening spontaneously, autonomously, independent of any personal self. Because of the Field, you call me. Because of the Field, I reply. Because of the Field the persona, the voice, articulates in languaging it knows you will understand. But I have nothing to do with it. (He laughs.)
KB: The field you speak of is the Field of Consciousness?
Dr. Hawkins: It is consciousness as a field speaking personally. There is no person speaking.
KB: I understand that completely.
Dr. Hawkins: The Field knows that…
KB: All right. I believe that. You use the art of kinesiology to discern truth from falsehood. In your book, The Eye of the I, you’ve written about kinesiology stating, “It’s a tool to recover and to demonstrate for all to see that lost connection with the higher realities.” Would you explain how it works?
Dr. Hawkins: Years ago I attended a lecture by Dr. John Diamond on kinesiology. When I saw him demonstrate kinesiology (muscle testing), I witnessed it from a different plane. In my mind, it saw it as the Field of Consciousness recognizing what is supportive of life and what is not. The Infinite Field reacts impersonally by acting from the etheric body through the acupuncture meridians.
KB: And do you trust it as a flawless methodology? Since you are relying on the human musculature system for answers to the mysteries of eternal truth, do you think the body could lie?
Dr. Hawkins: Well, the body has nothing to do with it. The body is like a lever. It is only by the protoplasmic response, via the acupuncture system, the quality is being revealed. In the presence of truth the body grows strong. In its absence the body goes weak. I liken the Infinite Field of Consciousness more to an electrostatic or gravitational field. Within that field our karma is like little iron filings. What we come into the world as, as a result of our past decisions, has a certain configuration. Within the Infinite Field everyone is automatically positioned as a consequence of the Field — not as a consequence of a personal decision. What you have chosen to become now becomes subject to the Infinite Field. What you hold as potentialities becomes actualized, not because of you, but because of the power of the Field. We claim credit for causality, but that is just an illusion. It is the Field causing the phenomenon. Ego sees itself as the agent of process when actually it is not.
