She walked into the room and slowly surveyed those present. It seemed as if she was searching for a familiar face — someone to feel at ease with…but for now they were all strangers.
Her uneasiness being amongst so many was definitely apparent. What would she talk about; how should she act; how would others perceive her? She saw a place on the other side of the room and headed in that direction, sure that no one would pay attention to her attempting to go unnoticed.
As she sat in her “hide-away,” viewing the attendees, she couldn’t help but take note of how most people were having fun; laughing, telling jokes, renewing old friendships, having intimate conversations, eating, drinking and just being merry.
She found herself wondering why she had such a hard time fitting in. Why she was so uncomfortable in crowds. She realized she loved the one-on-one connections; but this…it seemed almost too overwhelming. It was obvious that not everyone felt as she did…many appeared to be having a great time…living life, enjoying the camaraderie of others.
What was wrong with her? Why was she being such a wallflower? She felt the desire to participate; however, something inside seemed to hold her back — but what?
As I sit here, writing this synopsis, I find myself totally relating — what about you? Are you one who likes to stay home, away from the crowds? Do you interact just within your circle of friends? Or perhaps you enjoy mingling with groups of people and making new friends, new connections? Whether you feel like keeping a distance from others, or you love to experience what people (and life) have to offer, remember to be comfortable with who you are — whether as a wallflower or a social butterfly.
I do, however, believe one way brings isolation and a journey into life that will be slow, long and difficult. If, on the other hand, we savor and experience life fully, that same path will not be as slow, as long, nor as difficult.
We can indeed live a solitary life and travel our path alone; or we can share our knowledge, wisdom and companionship and accept all that life has to offer…
Whatever decision we make, it is important that we accept our choice…and to savor the life plan we embrace. Eventually we will all find our destiny. Take care my friends…hope to see you among the crowds!
