It is amazing to me how strong we, as individuals, can be. This was made apparent on June 28, 2003. While driving home on Nevada 95-South at 630pm my car was struck on the passenger side from an out-of-control SUV. When I realized what was going to happen three thoughts went through my head…"I’m going to get hit; I’m going to go into the barrier; and "I’m going to die." Obviously the latter did not take place. Instead, my car literally "flew" over the barrier and landed on the northbound freeway in the fast lane. A large truck saw the whole thing and was able to stop two car lengths from causing the third scenario. Although my car was totaled and the witnesses and highway patrol said I should not have walked away, I did. The other guy, the one who hit me, drove away very quickly…and he was caught just as quickly! I’m not sure what all happened as it was so fast and yet it seemed as if I was in slow motion. Truly a surreal moment in time. My perception of what took place was different than the witnesses who informed me I "did not roll the car over the barrier but flew over it." My angels were certainly in my corner that day! The one thing learned through this experience was that death is not a scary thing. I just knew I was going to die and it was okay. I felt no emotion, only a calmness — a peacefulness not experienced before. There was no time for thoughts of family or friends only the inevitable. It has been a month now and as I look back at the miracle that took place I am still in awe. There is a great power in knowing you have faced death and have decided to truly live. Each day we have a choice. Do we allow outer circumstances to dictate our destiny? Or do we embrace that inner strength of who we are and make our own decision? I’m not sure what is down the road; however, I do know it is something spectacular…because I choose it to be. I wasn’t the victim of a hit and run, I was the recipient of a miracle … LIFE in a world of unlimited possibilities.
