A Special Approach To New Year’s Resolutions

by Gala Gorman

Draw on everything you’ve got in you and push to the finish. If you’ve taken every step along the way with intention, then you’ve already met your subconscious head on. You know what I mean…that little voice that says you can’t or, even worse, won’t do it. The subconscious is highly invested in the status quo — the known and familiar. It isn’t going to just step aside and be a bystander as momentous changes happen in your life. You might think that, as long as you know it is there, you have taken its power away. There was a time where I would have concurred.

Now, I know it’s easier to coax your subconscious into cooperating. You use a carrot rather than a stick. Fighting the subconscious is like trying to reach your destination by constantly swimming upstream. I don’t need to make my life that difficult. Instead, I will choose the places where I swim and sometimes I will even get out of the water and walk. Other times, I might just need to sit for a while and give Spirit an opportunity to show me the easiest route. With every step or stroke, you are reprogramming your subconscious, and it begins to feel comfortable in the new life and way of living. Rather than trying to beat it into submission, you have its full support and that makes your way much easier.

So if you accept that we are all procrastinators on some level and have resolved to do something about it, you might next be confronted by your conditioning with respect to having goals and desires. You might question whether a spiritual person truly serves humanity by focusing on him or herself. We need to get this out in the open right now. (You notice I didn’t say out of the way. Your subconscious will keep bringing this up, in all forms of resistance, until you have effectively reprogrammed yourself.) Your goals are very personal and, while I believe that I can do more for universal welfare if I have first mastered managing my own life, you might believe your focus should be on others.

Do you honestly believe you can give enough to make a real difference if you are limited by the box your life fits into now? The more abundance and success you manifest in your life, the more you have to give and share by creating your life intentionally, step by step. You are leading by example. That’s what Jesus (and many other prophets before and after him) did. He told us we are capable of doing everything he did and more. Do you believe that? If not, why not start! You have embarked on a magickal adventure that, once begun, can’t be stopped.

LEARNING HOW TO MEDITATE
There are many different types of meditation, but virtually all forms take you to the same place. Two types widely practiced are:

1. Mindfulness (or Zen) meditation - Mindfulness is an activity you can practice any time, anywhere. In this method, you use meditation as a way to work with the forces in your life to understand and find meaning in them. The goal is to put yourself in a meditative state while working or performing any activity. Once you begin to feel more confident in your ability to handle the situations you encounter, you make better choices.

2. Transcendental meditation or TM - TM requires you to repeat a mantra for 20 minutes, twice daily, while sitting quietly in a chair with your eyes closed.

You can use meditation to gain perspective and control of the mind. Meditation provides you with a centering technique that allows you to free yourself from stereotypical responses. Problems become smaller as you become more centered and focused. It becomes easier to gain perspective and see how you would like to influence the outcome of a situation. You can then exercise that influence consciously, with a goal and a plan. You can grasp the problem much more quickly and solve it much more creatively.

Meditation requires discipline. While you can see glimpses of meditation’s benefits very quickly, it is consistent long-term practice that produces lasting transformation. Benefits of regular meditation far outweigh the costs.
