Clearing The Confusion On Oxygen by John Heinerman, Ph.D. What are you squirting in your mouth?" "Oxygen," says Laurie Jessup, a 44-year-old professional from Florida. "Oxygen? Why are you doing that?" "I’m not using my inhaler anymore," says Jessup who has had chronic acute asthma since the age of 13. "I was having an attack one day at work and instead of reaching for my inhaler, I figured what do I have to lose it’s only oxygen, and took a squirt of Vitamin O and almost instantly my chest relaxed and my breathing returned to normal." Since then, Jessup has continued taking the oxygen supplement daily in place of her inhaler. Oxygen supplements are everywhere but why do we need them? What’s wrong with just taking some extra deep breaths of air everyday? Dr. John Heinerman says the problem is that we are oxygen deficient, "So many of us experience fatigue, even when we shouldn’t be tired, and the common symptoms of itchy eyes, plugged sinuses and difficult breathing are prevalent everywhere. The problem is that we aren’t getting enough oxygen." REASONS FOR OXYGEN DEFICIENCIES Pollution in our bustling cities, where many people live and work, is fraught with toxic chemicals. Urban air is tough on the respiratory system and can upset the body’s delicate balance of inhaled oxygen and discharged carbon dioxide wastes. Although carbon dioxide waste is a necessary byproduct of metabolic functions, excess retention of it can slow revitalizing oxygen delivery to the brain. "Our ancestors were getting more oxygen into their bodies then we are today," says Heinerman, a Ph.D., and medical anthropologist whose research has taken him to 33 countries, where he has worked with folk healers as well as top medical doctors and scientists. "Air samples taken from specimens of ancient amber show that a long time ago earth’s atmosphere contained more oxygen than it does now." Another equally important factor contributing to oxygen deficiency could be the food we eat. "Sugary foods tend to act as a nutritional ‘ball and chain’ when it comes to our bodies’ health and well being," says Heinerman. "Quite simply, sugar deprives the red blood cells of the oxygen they require to produce energy, sustain physical endurance and keep the immune system from malfunctioning." OXYGEN, OUR MOST VITAL NUTRIENT? When we think of nutrients, the more common ones usually come to mind, like vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron, but nothing like oxygen. However, oxygen is one of the most important nutrients of all for the sustenance of life. "We may go without every other nutrient for a surprising length of time, but if our oxygen intake is suddenly cut off we would quickly suffocate and die within minutes," says Heinerman. Recent clinical studies have demonstrated that when blood oxygen is increased, other than through normal respiration, the body responds with increased energy levels while diminishing immune related allergies and asthma symptoms. THE PROOF IS IN THE BLOODSTREAM As a lead researcher in two important clinical studies, Heinerman proved the energy-giving properties in the oxygen supplement Vitamin O, and was also able to prove the increased presence of it in the bloodstream. "Supplemental oxygen provides the body with energized oxygen molecules and trace mineral content that help counter oxygen deficiencies," says Heinerman who conducted his studies with Vitamin O, a supplemental oxygen produced by Rose Creek Health Products. The supplement works by increasing blood oxygen levels and reducing accumulations of excess carbon dioxide (CO2) waste. In addition, it is the only electrically activated oxygen solution that has been clinically proven to increase blood oxygen levels when used on a consistent basis. Tested through a randomized, double blind, blood gas analysis, study participants who took the Vitamin O formula experienced increased arterial blood oxygen and elevated carbon dioxide discharge. "This is the first time that a supplemental oxygen product, such as Vitamin O, has been randomly tested through blood gas analysis machines," says Heinerman. "Other companies promoting oxygen supplements should conduct studies on their own products so that consumers become better informed about what they are taking." ARE YOU A 3 O’CLOCK ADDICT? What do you do for a lift around mid-afternoon? Most people reach for beverages that will give them a quick boost, like coffee, sodas or energy drinks - but could those same beverages cause you to crash by 5 o’clock? Looking at the ingredient labels from some of the more popular mid-afternoon drinks you can see that it is primarily caffeine and sugar that give people the false sense of energy Starbucks Coffee Frappuccino Ingredients Starbucks Coffee (caffeine), milk, sugar, maltodextrin, and pectin Red Bull Energy Drink Ingredients carbonated water, sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, taurine, glucoronolactone, caffeine, inositol, niacin, D-pantothenol, pyridoxine HCL, vitamin B12, artificial flavours, colors SoBe Adrenaline Rush Ingredients filtered water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, taurine, d-ribose, l-carnitine, natural flavor, inositol, sodium citrate, ascorbic acid, caffeine, monopotassium phosphate, salt, gum arabic, ester gum, siberian ginseng root extract, pyridoxine hydrochloride, guarana seed extract, caramel color, beta-carotene, folic acid, cyanocobalamin Mountain Dew Ingredients Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup and/or sugar, concentrated orange juice and other natural flavors, citric acid, sodium benzoate (preserves freshness), caffeine, sodium citrate, gum arabic, yellow 5, erythorbic acid (preserves freshness), calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor) and brominated vegetable oil.
