I would like to ask a question. How many of you consider yourselves perfectionists? And if you are a perfectionist in what areas of your life; and to what degree?

Ask yourself, "do I have to straighten pictures on the wall?" "When I fill out forms or write letters do I start over when I make a mistake?" "Do I need to have everything in its’ place?" If the answer is yes then perhaps a look into other areas of your life would be beneficial. Perfectionism is a good thing; however, it can be a curse.

Many of us who live a life of checks and balances can overextend our workload just to get something right. For me it takes much longer when I want everything in its’ place or I want just that "right" look. Don’t get me wrong, without perfectionists in our world we would have less order and more chaos around us…aren’t you glad that you are one of us? (just a joke)

Being a perfectionist has its place as long as we are in balance with it. When we allow ourselves to go overboard on any project then we run the risk of becoming overwhelmed and frustrated because of that inner drive to make it right.

Have you ever challenged yourself to become less obsessed with tasks at hand? To be more flexible and less stringent. If you look at the answer it will give you an inkling as to the level of your inner drive for completion.

Author Dr. Richard Carlson wrote a book entitled, "Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and It’s All Small Stuff." This remarkable book, I believe, had those of us on the fast track in mind. Each chapter is only 1-1/2 to 2 pages long and addresses life and how we take ourselves…which is much too serious I think. Of course I’m looking at it from the best of all teachers — life’s experiences. We don’t have to be rocket scientists to know that life is a system of checks and balances. Discovering what drives us, what our payoff is and how much we value ourselves can be a remarkable gift to those around us, the universe and that person who looks in the mirror each day and celebrates a new beginning. I would highly recommend you read "Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…" you will be glad that you did.

And for all the fathers, this is your month. Celebrate with us your strengths, your love, your courage. Happy Father’s Day. Take care.
