Dear Louise,

Please give me your thoughts on something I seem to struggle with on a daily basis. I have a chronic skin condition. I know it’s self-created and have been working to understand the “message” and associated acts to bless and release this condition. Metaphysical teachings say that “what you resist persists,” and that “all is God.” On the other hand, God, the Infinite Source, wants me to be healthy and vibrant. It feels like searching for the answer, reciting affirmations, visualizing perfect health, and so on, are ways to “resist” what’s happening to me on a physical level. Let’s face it — I want it to go away. Please give me your thoughts on these seemingly contradictory metaphysical teachings. Thanks so much!

W.S., Baltimore, MD

Instead of wanting this condition to go away, let’s look at how you can heal it. Your body is always doing its best to be healthy in spite of what you’re doing to it. I wonder what you eat on a daily basis. The foods you eat have so much to do with the skin, and the words you speak or swallow have so much to do with protecting your individuality. So is it junk foods or junk thoughts that are being consumed by you—or maybe both? Go to a good nutritionist and clean up your diet. Go on a negativity fast. Stop thinking negative thoughts of any kind for at least one month. Constantly say to yourself: It is safe to be me. I am good enough just as I am. I love all of my body. I am worth taking care of. I allow my body to be healthy. I love me.

Dear Louise,

I’m an adult child of an alcoholic family and have been in an alcoholic marriage for 13 years. Along with my husband’s struggle, my struggle has been just as great with my own co-dependency. I’ve been a member of Al-Anon on and off for four years. Now that my husband is in an in-patient treatment program, I still face the guilt of the years I enabled him and maybe postponed him reaching his “bottom.” I’ve provided a healthy home environment for myself and our ten year old son during this separation, but I still love this man and feel I need forgiveness for my weakness, as well as my inability to be tougher. Is there an affirmation you might suggest to help me with my part of this healing process, now that my family is on the road to recovery?

M.J., Houston, TX

Goodness, child, you’ve been in Al-Anon for years and you haven’t learned that you’re not responsible for your husband’s addiction? Nor are you responsible for your parents’ addiction. You’re only responsible for your own thoughts. Every guilt thought is a healing thought that’s wasted. If you want to help this man, learn to love, cherish, and respect yourself. Release the need to punish yourself. You’ve always been doing the best you knew how. You don’t need forgiveness; you need love and support. Stand up, love yourself now, and your son will learn to have self-respect. You’re a powerful woman, so use this power in a positive way. I, Louise Hay, forgive you! Affirm: I am always doing the best I can, and that is good enough. I love and respect myself now and forever more. All is well in our world.

Dear Louise,

I have a great life. I’ve got a wonderful husband, loving children, and a fabulous job. However, I want to lose weight. But I never seem to be able to get rid of that extra 10 to 15 pounds. What do you suggest?

R.C., San Francisco, CA

May you never suffer more. Count your blessings, Dear One. Wanting to lose weight is not the same as doing something about it. Those last 10 to 15 pounds usually have to do with sugar, white flour, and dairy products. Take those out of your diet for a month and you’ll probably achieve your goal. Use sweet thoughts instead of sugar, comforting thoughts instead of milk, and thoughts of self-worth instead of flour! Affirm: I am deeply grateful for my life, and I know that only good lies before me. I love my body. I am blessed.
